BYD Song L Electric SUV Set to Compete with Tesla Model Y in China
The Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled the specifications of its latest electric SUV, the Song L, which is set to challenge the Tesla Model Y in the Chinese market.
According to the regulatory body under MIIT, the BYD Song L electric SUV will measure 4840mm in length, 1950mm in width, and 1560mm in height, making it 90mm longer, 29mm wider, 64mm lower, and 40mm longer in wheelbase than the Tesla Model Y.
The Song L will sit on BYD's e-platform 3.0 and will come with 19'' and 20'' wheel options. It will be a part of the Dynasty series, which includes the Han, Tang, Yuan Plus (Atto 3), and the rest of the Song family.
The electric SUV will offer both single and dual motor variants. The single motor option will offer 230 kW of power (308 HP), while the AWD dual-motor version will have a front motor with 150 kW. The maximum power of the Song L is 380 kW (510 HP), with a top speed limited to 201 km/h.
The BYD Song L will feature an LFP Blade battery manufactured by BYD's subsidiary Jinan Fudi Battery Co., Ltd. (FinDreams). The exact range of the vehicle has not been announced yet.
BYD has set an official objective to achieve sales of 3 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) within this year, with an optimistic aim to reach 3.6 million units. In July, BYD broke a record by delivering 262,161 NEVs.
The Song L is expected to launch in Q4 this year, with a starting price of 200,000 yuan (27,600 USD). Like other Dynasty series EVs, the Song L doesn't have a BYD logo on the front but the Chinese character Song (宋). On the rear, the car doesn't have traditional Build Your Dreams writing but only BYD marque.
The BYD Song L mid-size SUV has dimensions (L/W/H) 4840/1950/1560mm and a wheelbase of 2930mm, with a curb weight of 2385 kg.
With the launch of the Song L, BYD continues to expand its electric vehicle portfolio and challenge the dominance of foreign brands in the Chinese market. The Song L's competitive pricing, impressive specifications, and Chinese heritage are expected to make it a formidable competitor to the Tesla Model Y.
