Race Day at Kentucky Downs Highlights $13 Million Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes
Kentucky Downs Prepares for Exciting Kentucky Turf Cup
The KTDF Kentucky Turf Cup, the headline event on a card featuring six Stakes races worth a total of $13 million for Kentucky-bred horses, is set to take place on September 6, 2025. The race, scheduled for 11:30 AM Central with a post time for the Turf Cup at 5:20 PM Central, offers a purse of $2.5 million and an automatic Breeders' Cup Turf berth to the winner.
Several top contenders are expected to participate in the Invitational Stakes at 1 1/2 miles. Among them is Vote No (Kelsey Danner, Luis Saez), a son of Divisidero, who has had a successful year with two wins, one second, and one third in six starts. Vote No won his second race at Kentucky Downs, adding to his growing reputation.
Mercante (Brian Knippenberg Joseph Ramos), a five-year-old son of Gun Runner, is another strong contender. Mercante has three wins and a second in six starts this year, but has never run at Kentucky Downs or raced this far.
6 Grand Sonata (Todd Pletcher, Tyler Gafflione 4-1) is a defending champion, having won the Kentucky Turf Cup last year. However, Grand Sonata has not won since last year, finishing as runner-up in the United Nations and Arlington Million.
8 Ole Crazy Bone (Mike Maker, Flavien Prat 15-1) has finished in the money in five of six starts this year with two wins. The trainer, Mike Maker, is tops in career wins at Kentucky Downs, and the jockey, Flavien Prat, is one of the best in the business.
7 Utah Beach (Ignacio Correas IV, Joel Rosario 6-1) has two wins in six starts this year and has run at Kentucky Downs. He comes in off good works and is a top pick for the race.
11 Fort Washington (Shug McGaughey, Junior Alvarado 9-2) is the Arlington Million winner and has three wins in five starts this year. Fort Washington has run twice at Kentucky Downs, finishing second in 2023 and fifth in 2022.
Divin Propos (Saffie Joseph, Frankie Detorri), a French-bred son of George Vancouver, has two wins in nine starts on American soil and has finished in the top three in ten of sixteen lifetime starts with four wins.
10 Corruption (Mark Casse, Jose Ortiz 6-1) has five wins and a second in six starts this year but no wins have come in Stakes company. The trainer, Mark Casse, has a knack for getting grass horses ready, and the rider, Jose Ortiz, is one of the hottest in the game this year.
9 Anglophile (Brian Lynch, Declan Cannon 8-1) ran fifth in the Kentucky Turf Cup last year and won the Dueling Grounds Derby at Kentucky Downs in 2023. Anglophile has only three career wins in twenty-three starts but is battle-tested as his last sixteen starts have been in Stakes company.
El Rezeen (Todd Pletcher, Irad Ortiz Jr.), a son of English Channel, has two seconds in three starts this year and two wins in ten career starts overall, but has no starts over this surface and no stakes wins.
Tawny Port (Miguel Clement, Manuel Franco), a son of Pioneerof the Nile, is a turf distance specialist after starting on dirt in the Kentucky Derby and nine other graded Stakes. He recently ran second in the August 30 Bowling Green Gold Cup at Kentucky Downs.
