Race of 2025: Jasper Philipsen triumphs in the sprint during the 8th stage in Zaragoza
Jasper Philipsen Claims Second Stage Victory in Vuelta a España
In a thrilling finish to the first stage of the Vuelta a España, Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) emerged victorious in a sprint, securing his second stage victory in this year's race.
The Belgian cyclist, who had earlier won the red jersey of the general classification leader in the first stage, held off a surge from Elia Viviani (Lotto) to win by half a wheel. However, Viviani was later disqualified from the race, making Philipsen's victory even more significant.
The stage, which was 1,635 km long and started from Monzon Templario, saw a breakaway of three riders that was caught 17 km from the finish. In the final sprint, Philipsen slotted into the wheel of Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) before making his move to take the win.
Philipsen expressed his joy after the race, stating that each of his victories, including the 15th one, is special due to the suffering on the mountain stages. He also mentioned that he had to find his own way back during the final sprint after losing his teammates a few hundred meters from the finish.
The win in Saragossa comes after Philipsen withdrew from the Tour de France due to injury. This victory marks his next winning streak in a Grand Tour, with the red jersey of the general classification leader remaining on his shoulders, courtesy of his first-stage win.
Jasper Philipsen's 15th Grand Tour victory is a testament to his resilience and determination. As he continues his journey in the Vuelta a España, he will undoubtedly be a rider to watch, aiming to add more victories to his impressive tally.
Meanwhile, Torstein Traen (Bahrain-Victorious) retained the red jersey of the general classification leader, maintaining his position at the top of the standings. The race continues, with riders battling it out in the gruelling stages ahead.
