In the ongoing Eurobasket 2025 tournament, a regrettable incident of racism marred the game between Germany and Lithuania in Tampere, Finland. The incident, which occurred during halftime, involved monkey noises directed at the German national team captain, Dennis Schröder.

Following an immediate review of the incident, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) issued a statement, expressing their zero-tolerance policy towards such behaviour. FIBA stated that monkey noises are a step too far and that they do not respect or accept racism.

In response, FIBA has taken swift action. They have banned a suspect from attending further Eurobasket 2025 games. The individual in question is Filip Petrusev, who was previously disqualified for shoving during a match and was fined €5,000. However, he managed to avoid a further suspension.

The German Basketball Federation (DBB) alerted security about the incident, and the authorities are now involved in the investigation. FIBA has also provided the relevant footage and information to the authorities.

Dennis Schröder, the victim of the racism incident, expressed his disapproval and stated that such behaviour has no place in sports or society. The Lithuanian team delegation is expected to be informed by FIBA about the incident.

FIBA continues to take a strong stance against racism in basketball events. They aim to support efforts to prevent similar incidents in future games. The organisation plans to contact the Lithuanian team delegation to discuss the matter further.

The Eurobasket 2025 game between Germany and Lithuania ended with a victory for Germany, with a score of 107:88. Despite the unfortunate incident, the game resumed after the authorities dealt with the situation, ensuring the safety and comfort of all players and spectators.

Two people were ejected from the arena during the game, underlining the seriousness with which FIBA and the authorities are treating such incidents. The basketball community hopes that this incident will serve as a reminder that racism has no place in sports and that everyone should be treated with respect and dignity.
