Racing champion Elisa Longo Borghini set to resume competition next week, aiming for top performance at upcoming World Championships

Italy has announced an increased team size for the World Championships road race in Rwanda, with six elite women set to support Elisa Longo Borghini's ambitions. The Italian cycling federation's decision was reported by Gazzetta.

The Italian team, which will also include Marta Cavalli, Silvia Persico, Elena Franchi, and Chiara Consonni, is aiming to win their first elite rainbow jersey at the event. The World Championships will take place from September 20 to September 27, 2025.

Longo Borghini, who won the GP de Plouay in 2021, a hilly one-day race in Brittany, and the Giro d'Italia Women for the second time in July, has made it clear that Rwanda, alongside the Giro, is one of her major goals for the 2025 season. The World Championships road race, a testing, hilly course, presents an opportunity for Longo Borghini to secure her first elite rainbow jersey, a title that Italy has not won since Elisa Balsamo's victory in 2021.

Longo Borghini will head to altitude training on Mount Teide in Tenerife as she prepares for the World Championships road race in Rwanda. The identities of the other riders who will join Longo Borghini are not yet clear.

The budget constraints affecting several teams due to the high costs associated with the World Championships location have not deterred Longo Borghini's determination. In the spring, she stated that the course in Rwanda suits her characteristics. The Italian rider, who has never won a world road race title, will return to racing next week after abandoning the Tour de France Femmes.

Elisa Longo Borghini will form part of the UAE Team ADQ line-up for the Kreiz Breizh Elites Féminin and the WorldTour Classic Lorient Agglomération before focusing on her preparations for the World Championships. The Italian team's goal is clear: to bring home the rainbow jersey from Rwanda.
