Racing competitor Ayuso triumphs in the 12th stage of the Vuelta, as tensions abate
In a thrilling turn of events at the Vuelta a España, Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates clinched a decisive victory in stage 12. The 52-man breakaway group, which included more riders bridging the gap, managed to put nearly five minutes between themselves and the peloton, including race leader Jonas Vingegaard.
Ayuso's impressive performance in the sprint saw him cross the finish line first in Los Corrales de Buelna, with Javier Romo close behind in second place and Brieuc Rolland finishing third. The Spaniard's win was speculated to be a preview of his potential move to Lidl-Trek next season, a team he is currently linked with.
Ayuso, who is familiar with the road where the finish line is located, expressed his satisfaction with his performance, attributing his success to a well-timed sprint. The stage win marks Ayuso's first in the Vuelta a España and adds another feather to his cap in an already impressive career.
Meanwhile, the general classification favourites had a relatively quiet afternoon in stage 12, with Vingegaard finishing well over six minutes behind the winners. The Dane, however, remains in the red jersey, followed closely by Joao Almeida and Tom Pidcock.
The stage 13 route, starting from Cabezon de la Sal in Cantabria, will be 202.7 kilometres long. The challenging course will include one of the toughest climbs of the race, Angliru, which is sure to test the mettle of even the strongest riders.
In other news, Israel-Premier Tech, the target of pro-Palestinian protests at the finish line of stage 11 in Bilbao, started the stage in Laredo despite pressure to withdraw. The team managed to navigate the protests and continue the race, demonstrating their commitment to the competition.
As the race progresses, Ayuso's win in stage 12 serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of cycling and the excitement that lies ahead in the remaining stages of the Vuelta a España.
