Racing prodigy Verstappen leaves McLaren team in awe with a breathtaking performance at Monza, setting the record for fastest Formula 1 race in history.
In a thrilling race at the iconic Monza circuit, Max Verstappen of Red Bull claimed victory in the Italian Grand Prix, setting a new record for the fastest race in Formula One history. However, Oscar Piastri of McLaren held onto his lead in the drivers' standings, extending his advantage over Lando Norris to 31 points.
The race began with a frantic start, with Verstappen pushing Piastri's McLaren off the track. The Dutch driver was forced to let Norris take the lead, but soon regained control of the race with a daring move at the chicane on lap four.
Norris, who did not pit until lap 47, found himself in third place. Verstappen opened up a gap of around six seconds over Norris by the time he pitted to switch from medium to hard tyres on lap 38. However, Norris's poor pit stop could have cost him a podium spot, had McLaren not enforced a position swap to prevent another slice of bad luck from costing him points in the title battle.
Charles Leclerc, last year's winner, could not secure a podium spot and finished fourth. Lando Norris finished second, but would have placed third behind his teammate had it not been for McLaren's intervention.
Lewis Hamilton started the race in 10th position due to a five-place grid penalty, but charged up to sixth place thanks to some impressive driving. George Russell finished ahead of Hamilton, preventing him from pushing past his former Mercedes teammate in yesterday's race.
Verstappen's win was his third of the season, which has been dominated by McLaren's performance, winning all but four GPs. However, Red Bull's Verstappen still trails championship leader Piastri by 94 points.
Piastri finished third in the Italian Grand Prix, maintaining his lead in the drivers' standings. This result means he heads into the next race with a comfortable 31-point advantage over Norris.
The race at Monza was not without drama, with Norris calling Verstappen an "idiot" over the team radio due to the incident on the first lap. Despite this, both drivers showed impressive racing skills throughout the race, providing fans with an exciting spectacle.
As the Formula One season continues, the battle for the championship is heating up. Piastri will look to extend his lead, while Verstappen will aim to close the gap. The next race takes place in Singapore, where the drivers will face a completely different challenge as they navigate the tight streets of the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
