Racing Team ROOKIE Endures Collision with GR Yaris in Competition
In the heart of Miyagi Prefecture, at the Sportsland SUGO racing course known for its narrow tracks and dramatic races, the ROOKIE Racing team faced a challenging day during the "Super Taikyu SUGO 3 Hours Race" held from October 9 to 11.
The team's GR Yaris met with an unfortunate incident on the third corner at 9:38 am, causing significant damage to the front of the vehicle. The driver, Masahiro Sasaki, was unharmed in the crash.
The repairs began immediately, with a GR engineer communicating with headquarters to secure necessary parts from Miyagi Toyota (Iwanuma Branch). The radiator was put in place by 11:28 am, followed by the reattachment of the headlamps at 11:37 am. By 12:58 pm, the engine of the GR Yaris roared back to life.
The repairs served as a team-building exercise for ROOKIE Racing, fostering a sense of unity among the team members. Chief Mechanic Takashi Mitsuzuka even called a local friend, a master panel beater, to lend a hand.
Akio Toyoda, or Morizo, the President of Toyota Motor Corporation, observed the repairs and was inspired by the team's cooperation. Noriaki Mitsuhashi, the photographer on site, commented on the team's growth and unity during the repairs.
One GR engineer acknowledged the gap in skills between themselves and Mitsuzuka, the chief mechanic. Despite this, the team persevered, and by 1:30 pm, the GR Yaris was back on the track.
The repairs were not in vain, as a fan posted a video of the GR Yaris racing after its return, congratulating the team. Masahiro Sasaki, the driver, was even given a reassuring call by Morizo after the crash.
Interestingly, unlike the previous "Fuji 24 Hours Race", no spare car was prepared for the SUGO race. This added an extra layer of pressure to the team, but their determination and teamwork paid off.
The ROOKIE Racing team aimed to have the GR Yaris repaired and operable by the afternoon free practice. Despite the odds, they managed to achieve this goal, showcasing their resilience and dedication.
