Rail commuters have until Friday to cast their votes on prospective train aesthetics

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has opened voting for the design of its upcoming 8000-series rail fleet. The decision, which is significant for the future of the Metro system, falls in the hands of the public.

The voting, which commenced on Aug. 18 and will run until Aug. 22 at 11:59 p.m., presents customers with three exterior design options to choose from. The General Manager and CEO of Metro, Randy Clarke, has made a statement about the train design voting, encouraging everyone to participate.

The winning concept will be announced a week after the voting deadline. The chosen design will adorn the trains carrying the region into the future, reflecting the heritage of the transit system and embracing modern design principles.

The new trains in the 8000-series fleet will feature safe and spacious connected cars, providing ample space for wheelchairs, scooters, bikes, and additional seating. This fleet of the future is expected to go into service in 2027.

The Metro system, synonymous with the DMV, boasts a unique element in its classic architecture found in its stations. The iconic look of Metro's fleet vehicles is another notable feature that the designers of the new trains' exteriors have honoured in the branding refresh.

The new trains are part of a broader branding refresh that includes refined Metro logos and illustrations. This refresh aims to pay homage to the system's heritage while embracing a warm palette that embodies modern design principles.

As the General Manager and CEO of Metro, Randy Clarke is leading this transformation. The voting is a testament to his commitment to involving the community in the evolution of the Metro system.

So, if you're a Metro customer, this is your chance to make a difference. Cast your vote and help shape the future of the Metro rail fleet. The decision you make will be a lasting part of the Metro system's legacy, carrying the region forward into the future.
