Rail service suspension between Nordhausen and Sangerhausen, anticipated to last till mid-October
The railway line connecting Halle, Nordhausen, and Eichenberg will undergo modernization from September 2025, causing a six-week closure that begins on September 5 at 10 pm and ends on October 17. Deutsche Bahn, the rail network operator, announced the closure to make rail traffic in North Thuringia more flexible and reliable.
The closure affects the RE8 Halle - Leinefelde, RE9 Halle - Kassel, and extended services of line RB57 Nordhausen - Heilbad Heiligenstadt to Sangerhausen. During this period, there will be no train traffic on the line between Erfurt and Nordhausen from Friday to Sunday inclusive.
Construction work, which includes building 14 electronic signal boxes and renewing bridges, tracks, overhead lines, and platforms, will take place. This modernization project is expected to improve the overall rail infrastructure in North Thuringia, making rail traffic more efficient and reliable.
The company responsible for the renovation of the railway section between Sangerhausen and Nordhausen is DB InfraGO AG. Further closures are planned east of Saxony-Anhalt from October 17.
The modernization of the east-west main line between Halle and Kassel is ongoing at a significant cost. However, local residents are mainly annoyed by the train disruptions caused by the closure.
The lack of staffing in several signal boxes in Thuringia has led to many train delays. The modernization project aims to address these issues, ensuring a more reliable and efficient rail service in the future.
As a replacement for the closed line, buses will run every two hours between Erfurt and Nordhausen. Construction work is closing the regional rail line from North Thuringia to Saxony-Anhalt between Nordhausen and Sangerhausen until October 17.
Despite the inconvenience, the modernization project is anticipated to bring long-term benefits to rail traffic in North Thuringia. The closure will end on October 17, 2025.
