Railway service ScotRail abolishes peak-time fares starting from September 2025.
ScotRail has unveiled significant adjustments to its ticketing system, effective from September 1, 2022. The changes aim to continue offering savings to passengers while promoting sustainable public transport use.
Flexipass tickets, a popular choice among commuters, will see adjusted pricing from September 1. The adjustments ensure these tickets continue to provide savings compared to purchasing multiple Anytime Single or Return tickets.
In a bold move, the Scottish Government has decided to abolish Peak tickets from ScotRail, starting September 1, 2025. This decision forms part of an initiative to support a shift towards sustainable public transport and save people money, as stated by Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Transport.
The removal of peak fares is not limited to select routes. ScotRail is removing peak fares for many routes across the network, a move that is expected to benefit a vast number of passengers.
While Peak tickets are being phased out, Season Tickets will remain at their current pricing until September 27, offering a saving of at least 40% compared to purchasing five Anytime Day Return tickets at pre-September 1 prices.
Railcards, concessions, and enhanced discounts will continue to be available, with most remaining valid for travel after 9.15 am, in line with existing conditions. This ensures that those who rely on these discounts will still be able to enjoy savings on their journeys.
Notable reductions in fares have been announced for several routes. For instance, the price for a return ticket between Perth and Dundee will cost 31% less than before, and the price for a journey between Inverness and Elgin will be reduced by 34%.
One of the most significant reductions is the price for a return ticket between Edinburgh and Glasgow, which will decrease by 48%. This reduction is expected to make travel between Scotland's two largest cities more affordable for many.
However, with the removal of peak fares, Super Off-Peak Day Return tickets will be withdrawn. Passengers are advised to plan their travel accordingly to take advantage of the savings available.
It's worth noting that ScotRail currently boasts a customer satisfaction rate of 91%, making it one of the best operators in the United Kingdom. These changes are likely to further enhance the passenger experience and encourage more people to choose ScotRail for their travel needs.
