Railway Station area is set to transform into a vibrant, eco-friendly, and habitable urban district
The city of Brunswick is set to transform its main station area with a comprehensive development plan, which is now available for public consultation. The redevelopment project, scheduled in three phases, aims to integrate the main station into a contemporary urban context.
The first phase of the project focuses on crucial infrastructure projects, such as the construction of bicycle parking houses, the quarter garage, and the long-distance bus terminal. Additionally, Kurt-Schumacher-Straße will be rebuilt as a local access road and bus connection during this phase.
The second construction phase will see the demolition of the Atrium Bummel Center and the supplementation of the existing Iduna high-rise buildings with two block structures, offering residential uses. A large part of this phase will be developed by an investment company.
The central component of the redesign is the creation of green spaces. The Park Viewegs Garden will be expanded, and several pocket parks and greened street spaces will be created. The planning also includes climate protection measures, such as resource-efficient use of rainwater, green infrastructure elements, and an energy concept developed specifically for the quarter.
The third phase will bring significant changes, including the construction of a new long-distance bus terminal west of the main station and the extension of cycling infrastructure while maintaining traffic capacity by combining lanes of the ring road. A new entrance with clear orientation towards the city center will also be created, with buildings up to eight stories high planned.
The railway quarter will offer space for around 600 residential units, including 30% social housing. The development will also include offices, gastronomy, commerce, and social facilities, including two new daycare centers.
The proposal for the development will be heard by the district council in district 130 Mitte on September 2nd. It will then go to the committee for planning and construction for preliminary consultation on September 3rd, with the administrative committee making the final decision on September 9th.
The railway quarter has already received a gold preliminary certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), reflecting its commitment to sustainable mobility and a high-performance public transport system. The project is expected to contribute significantly to Brunswick's urban development and quality of life.
