Railway station vicinity to transform into a urban, eco-friendly, and comfortable housing area
Brunswick Unveils Ambitious Plans for New Sustainable Railway Quarter
The city of Brunswick is set to transform its main station area with the development of a new sustainable railway quarter. The project, which has received a gold preliminary certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), will prioritize sustainable mobility and integrate the main station into a contemporary urban context.
The development will take place in three phases, with the first phase focusing on infrastructure projects such as bicycle parking houses, the quarter garage, and the long-distance bus terminal, which will be built west of the main station. The existing Park Viewegs Garden will be expanded and will become the focus of the new quarter.
In the second phase, most of the development will be undertaken by an investment company. The Atrium Bummel Center will be demolished, and the existing Iduna high-rise buildings will be supplemented by two block structures with predominantly residential uses. Kurt-Schumacher-Straße will be rebuilt as a local access road and bus connection.
The third phase will see the creation of a new entrance with clear orientation towards the city center, directly opposite the main station. The Park Viewegs Garden will be expanded, and buildings up to eight stories high will be constructed. The traffic lanes of the ring road will merge with extended cycling areas while maintaining traffic performance.
The new railway quarter will also offer space for around 600 residential units, with 30% being social housing. The facades in the third phase will be oriented towards the regional cityscape. The development plan for the "main station surroundings" is now available for consultation, and the district council in district 130 Mitte will be heard on September 2. The decision will be made by the Administrative Committee on September 9.
In addition to offices, gastronomy, commerce, and social facilities, including two new daycare centers, the new railway quarter will feature attractive bicycle parking facilities in direct proximity to the main station. The new long-distance bus terminal will further enhance sustainable mobility options for commuters.
The railway quarter will integrate the main station into the city, creating a more cohesive and vibrant urban environment. The project plan draft was presented to the Environment Committee and the Construction Committee on September 3, 2023, and entrusted to the public for consultation. The agenda item will go to the Planning and Construction Committee for pre-consultation on the same day.
As the construction progresses, the city of Brunswick is committed to maintaining open communication with the public and involving them in the decision-making process. The new railway quarter is expected to be a significant step forward in the city's sustainable development and a testament to its commitment to creating a more livable and sustainable urban environment.
