Swiss Firm Revolutionises Energy Production with Railtrack Solar Farms

In an innovative leap for renewable energy, a Swiss firm, Sun-Ways, is leading the charge in developing a solution to site industrial solar farms by installing solar panels on railway lines. The idea for this groundbreaking technology came to Sun-Ways founder Joseph Scuderi in 2020, while he was standing on a station platform.

The first world-first railtrack solar farm was switched on in April in western Switzerland's Neuchâtel canton. This pioneering project, a testament to Scuderi's five-year dream, has been met with significant interest from various countries, including France, Belgium, Israel, Indonesia, and South Korea.

The solar panels, capable of generating electricity, can be installed between the tracks without disrupting the railway infrastructure or operations. A machine developed by track maintenance firm Scheuchzer SA can lay as many as 150 solar panels per hour between the tracks, ensuring efficient installation.

A three-year testing period is underway to determine the impact of the railtrack solar panels on passing trains and railway operations. The test site consists of 48 solar panels capable of generating an annual 16k kWh of electricity, roughly equivalent to the yearly output of four domestic rooftop arrays.

Scuderi views the railtrack solar farm as a complementary solution to other PV installations, not a competitor. He believes that this technology, when adopted globally, could significantly contribute to the world's renewable energy targets.

Despite numerous obstacles, Scuderi has successfully brought his vision to fruition. The Swiss company working on enabling the industrialization of solar systems by converting railway tracks into energy plants remains unnamed in the provided search results. However, their work is undoubtedly paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
