Rapid Depletion of Lake Cuitzeo in Michoacan

Lake Cuitzeo, once the second largest natural water body in Mexico, is on the brink of extinction. Located in a valley of the Neovolcanic Axis of Mexico, primarily in the state of Michoacán, with a small portion in Guanajuato, this endorheic lake is now a dry plain.

The lake level has significantly decreased, and the communities surrounding it are facing severe water scarcity. The villages, including Cuitzeo del Porvenir, are suffering, with many dying due to the lack of resources.

One of the few areas where mirrors of water still exist is Irámuco, a town located in the municipality of Acambaro, Guanajuato, bordering Michoacán. However, accessing this area is difficult, as it is through a ditch with muddy water surrounded by cracked earth, dug by the fishermen themselves.

The boat transfers for the inhabitants who live on Cerro Grande Island to Irámuco have become more complicated due to the practically dry lake. Trips that previously took 5 minutes now take 1 hour or more, making daily life increasingly difficult for those living in the area.

Sewage discharges from the communities near the tributary persist in Irámuco, further exacerbating the problem. At least a dozen wooden boats look neglected and abandoned on the shore of the piers in Lake Cuitzeo, waiting for the next rainy season.

The Mexican National Water Commission (CONAGUA) is responsible for the rescue of Lake Cuitzeo, managing water levels and preventing environmental pollution. However, the lake remains close to no longer existing as a lake, and the communities continue to pray for the rain to come.

Despite the tragedy unfolding in Lake Cuitzeo, no recent news was available about significant events such as the Uruguayan Girl's death during a school excursion in Cancun or the naming of Iván Espinosa as Global CEO and President of Nissan.

In the midst of this crisis, the people of Lake Cuitzeo continue to struggle, hoping for a better future and the return of their beloved lake.
