Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX Breaks Electric Vehicle Records

During the Formula 1 summer break, an extraordinary event took place at the Nardò test track in Italy. The team, including 17 professional drivers from Mercedes-AMG's motorsport division, aimed to demonstrate the future of electric motors and batteries and the speed that can be achieved.

At the heart of the event was the Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX, a car that featured three compact Yasa axial flux motors with a total power of over 1,000 kW (1,360 hp). The power density of these motors is three times higher than that of standard electric motors, with only a third of the space.

George Russell, a Formula 1 driver for Mercedes, flew to the event last Saturday to support the project and showcase the technology. He expressed his admiration for the GT XX, stating that the axial flux motors react as immediately and precisely as a Formula 1 engine.

Russell participated in a world record attempt for electric vehicles. During his stint, he averaged 300 km/h, and the team achieved a distance of 5,479 kilometers in 24 hours, surpassing the previous mark of 4,000 kilometers.

The team completed the distance of the Earth's circumference at the equator of 40,075 kilometers in just 7 days, 13 hours, and 24 minutes. The event also featured experienced racing drivers from various categories, including Doriane Pin from F1 Academy, Fabian Vettel, Luca Stolz (former DTM driver and GT pro), Norbert Siedler, Adam Christodoulou, and Uwe Nittel (rally pro).

The pit stops during the event lasted approximately one minute to recharge the battery with 900 kilowatts. The GT XX technology, as described by Russell, will revolutionize the driving experience, both on the racetrack and on the road. He also noted that the GT XX has endurance that he's only known from combustion engines.

The event took place during the Formula 1 summer break between races in Budapest and Zandvoort. It aimed to demonstrate the speed and potential of electric vehicles, and it certainly succeeded in doing so. The Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX has set a new standard for electric vehicle performance, and it's an exciting glimpse into the future of electric motors and batteries.
