Duchess Kumari, a new brand co-founded by actor-director Adhyayan Suman, Miss Universe India 2022 Divita Rai, and veteran designer Alka Suman, has recently unveiled its first capsule collection, "The Only One Edit". This collection is a unique blend of heritage textiles and techniques with Western silhouettes, creating garments that retain an Indian sense of regality while appealing to the modern woman.
The brand's goal is to create heirlooms for the modern woman who owns her journey. Each piece from The Only One Edit is designed with storytelling-led principles, aiming to feel like personal artifacts. The collection includes 11 limited-edition pieces, each made only once and in one size for one wearer.
The tartan fabric used in the collection is sourced with Indian hues and paired with handloom chanderi, creating a unique dialogue between Scottish rebellion and Indian rootedness. The fabrics used, such as heirloom khadi, bandhani silks, brocades, tartan checks, and hand-embellished satins, are ethically sourced and fairly compensated, with a focus on working with wholesalers who collaborate with weavers and textile-rich communities.
The color palette of the collection includes rust, charcoal, ivory, deep navy, and bursts of saffron and beetroot pink. Silhouettes in the collection are fluid yet structured, including deconstructed bandhgalas, layered skirts with tulle, cropped jackets, and tailored blouses with unexpected embroidery placements.
Traditional Indian techniques such as zardosi, aari, and hand-thread embroidery are used in the collection. Deliberate patchwork and raw hems reflect imperfection as beauty, adding to the collection's unique charm.
