Rare Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant autographed card fetches an unprecedented $12.9 million at auction
In an extraordinary turn of events, a one-of-a-kind 1-of-1 logo man card featuring NBA legends Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant has sold for a record-breaking $12.9 million at Heritage Auctions' special "Summer Platinum Night Sports Auction."
This unique card, hailing from Upper Deck Exquisite's Logoman series, is the only example created that includes only Jordan and Bryant. The card features two NBA logos, faces of both players, and on-card autographs from both legends.
The pre-auction estimate for the card was a mere $6 million, but the demand for this card proved to be astronomical. Multiple bids during the auction exceeded the initial estimate, ultimately leading to the record-breaking sale.
The previous sports card high was $12.6 million in 2022 for a mint condition 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle baseball card. This sale not only surpasses that record but more than doubles the previous most expensive basketball card, a 2007 dual-autograph Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant card, graded as PSA 6, which sold for $6.6 million in 2021.
Before the Mantle rookie, the Honus Wagner card held the title for the most expensive sports card, selling for $6.6 million in 2021.
The identity of the buyer remains undisclosed, but Chris Ivy, Heritage's director of sports auctions, expressed his excitement about the sale. "The demand for this card is astronomical," he said. "It's a testament to the enduring legacy of these two basketball icons."
In other news, Nike honoured "Mamba Day" on Sunday, Aug. 24, by restocking several of Kobe Bryant's Protro edition sneakers. This move comes after the tragic death of Bryant in 2020, making these sneakers even more sought-after.
Meanwhile, Steph Curry's Logoman from his rookie season in 2009-10 previously sold for $5.9 million, further showcasing the growing interest in sports cards.
The auction concluded on Sunday morning, leaving collectors and sports enthusiasts alike in awe of the record-breaking sale. The Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant card stands as the most sought-after example of the Upper Deck Logoman series.
