Rebranded Amazon Discount Membership Announced Alongside Amazon Access Center Launch
In a bid to cater to a broader consumer base and compete in the holiday shopping season, e-commerce giant Amazon has announced the launch of Amazon Access and Prime Access.
The announcement comes after a challenging quarter for Amazon, with its operating expenses rising 12.9% to $134 billion, and its operating income dropping by nearly half to $3.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021. This follows a Q2 net loss of $2 billion and an operating income drop from $7.7 billion to $3.3 billion.
To make its Prime benefits and discounts more accessible, Amazon has introduced Amazon Access. This new hub includes information on Amazon Layaway, SNAP EBT, and discounts. Prime Access, a discounted membership program for recipients of government assistance, is a key feature within Amazon Access. Membership in Prime Access has seen a significant increase, with more than a 300% rise from 2019 to 2021.
Target, another major retailer, is also adapting to changing shopping habits. The company is offering its holiday deals in October, on Oct. 6-8, and is giving customers a price match guarantee.
The push for affordability and accessibility follows Amazon's decision to increase its Prime membership fee for the first time since 2018, from $119 to $139. This move, coupled with the increasing inflation rates, has led to a shift in shopping habits among consumers. According to a Morning Consult survey, 85% of respondents cited increasing inflation as the reason behind their changing shopping habits, with 79% seeking discounts from retailers.
Interestingly, there are no specific government subsidies or social welfare benefits directly qualified for the use of Amazon Access mentioned. However, companies using platforms like Amazon Access might potentially benefit from indirect support, such as general government support programs, tax incentives, and funding opportunities to promote technological innovation and digital projects in Germany.
During this holiday season, consumers are expected to shop around for the best price, with 77% having reduced their shopping. Shoppers can pay online without a debit or credit card and pick up purchases at lockers or pickup counters within Amazon Access. The holiday gift guide features major brands, including KitchenAid and Peloton.
