"Rebuilding 'Alligator Alcatraz' is not necessary"
The immigration detention center, colloquially known as "Alligator Alcatraz," continues its operation in the vast swamp area of the Everglades, Florida, despite earlier resistance from a judge.
Originally opened by U.S. President Donald Trump in the summer, the temporary facility was constructed in just eight days on a little-used airport. The government's choice of name for the center, referencing the notorious high-security prison Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay, signifies the intended deterrence for inmates from attempting to escape due to the alligator-inhabited swamps.
The detention center, housing thousands of migrants until their deportation, was met with a lawsuit from environmentalists soon after its opening. The district court's order was based on the potential for "irreparable harm in the form of habitat loss and increased mortality of endangered species" in the Everglades, the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States.
However, an appeals court in Atlanta has temporarily stayed an injunction issued by the district court, preventing the demolition of the detention center for now. The appeals court fears that the demolition costs could be high due to potentially complex and extensive dismantling requirements, increased safety and environmental protection measures, and possible legal complications related to the site's condition and regulatory compliance.
The government has dismissed allegations of poor conditions at the detention center as unfounded. Critics, on the other hand, have criticised the cage-like cells for inmates and poor hygiene conditions at the center.
Ron DeSantis, the Republican governor of Florida, celebrated the government's legal victory regarding the detention center. The appeals court's decision is temporary, pending a final decision on the case. The government is determined to uphold the operation of the detention center, which remains a contentious issue in the ongoing migration debate.
