In 2024, Germany witnessed a significant surge in the recognition of foreign professional qualifications, with a record high of 95,500 approvals. This upward trend, which has been consistently observed since 2016, represents more than triple the number of recognitions recorded in that year.

The approvals were primarily concentrated in medical professions, with doctors and nurses leading the pack. In 2024, there was an increase of 19 percent in the number of approvals for nurse professional qualifications, totalling 32,500 recognitions and accounting for 41 percent of all approvals. Doctors and engineers also saw a significant number of recognitions, with 11,000 and 4,400 approvals respectively.

Refugees from Ukraine have been the largest group within the statistics, accounting for 29 percent of all recognition requests for vocational qualifications, up to the 2024/2025 data. Turkey remained the most represented country of training, with 9,200 recognitions in 2024.

The number of approvals for professional qualifications in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Philippines decreased, but there was an increase in the number of recognitions in Tunisia, India, and Syria. Notably, Ukraine followed Turkey with an increase of over 6,400 positively concluded procedures compared to the previous year.

The economy and politics in Germany have been repeatedly calling for faster recognition of foreign professional qualifications to address the shortage of skilled workers. The data for these recognitions was provided by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, Germany.
