Recycled Electric Vehicle Battery Modules Up for Grabs by Dutch Insurer
In an effort to make electric vehicle (EV) ownership more accessible and affordable, Dutch insurer Nationale-Nederlanden has introduced a new supplementary insurance module: the EV Battery Security Module. This innovative offering is specifically designed for the batteries of used battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) whose factory warranty for the battery has expired.
The EV Battery Security Module caters to cars up to 12 years old and/or with a mileage of up to 300,000 km. It is aimed at addressing the concerns of potential BEV buyers, particularly those worried about the reliability and potential issues with the BEV's battery.
According to a survey by Nationale-Nederlanden, 64% of potential BEV buyers in the Netherlands are concerned about potential issues with the BEV's battery. This concern is understandable, given that the battery is by far the most expensive part of a BEV. Repair or replacement fees for batteries can easily run into the thousands of euros.
The EV Battery Security Module covers the cost of battery repair or replacement if its capacity suddenly drops below 70% due to an inherent defect. It does not cover issues resulting from normal wear and tear, misuse, or damage caused by accidents.
The rise in the share of private owners of battery-electric cars is a testament to the growing popularity of EVs. Currently, 33% of private car owners in the Netherlands own a BEV. This increase is largely due to the increased supply on the second-hand market.
However, 39% of concerned potential BEV buyers cite reliability as an issue, while 44% cite limited range as a concern. Nationale-Nederlanden's CEO of Non-Life, Maurice Koopman, observes that many people have doubts about the battery when buying a used BEV. The EV Battery Security Module aims to help eliminate these concerns about sudden and unexpectedly high battery costs.
The EV Battery Security Module can be added to both new and existing car insurance policies. If successful, the pilot for this insurance module will be rolled out further. This initiative by Nationale-Nederlanden is a significant step towards making electric driving more attractive and feasible for everyone. Moreover, 63% of potential BEV buyers in the Netherlands cite lower operational cost and environmental benefits as major arguments for getting an EV.
In a world where environmental concerns are increasingly important, initiatives like the EV Battery Security Module by Nationale-Nederlanden are a step in the right direction. They not only make EVs more affordable but also address the concerns of potential buyers, thereby contributing to the growth of the EV market.
