Redefining Education: Transforming Classroom Atmosphere by Applying Behavioral Knowledge

Data is playing an increasingly significant role in education, helping educators uncover achievement gaps among student groups and transforming pedagogy and classroom culture. One company at the forefront of this data-driven revolution is Prepp, Inc, an operating system for K-12 teaching and learning, co-founded by Haozhen "Simon" Yang.

Prepp's adaptive homework platform provides educators with a continuous feed of actionable information. For instance, it can reveal which problems most students missed last night, enabling teachers to focus on those problems in the next lesson. This proactive approach empowers teachers to tailor their teaching methods to the specific needs of their students.

Insights from data can lead to targeted supports such as extra tutoring or new instructional strategies. For example, in one study, classes using a feedback-driven online homework tool saw lower-performing students improve significantly. This suggests that data isn't replacing human judgment; instead, it's augmenting it, allowing teachers to make decisions based on facts rather than assumptions.

However, building a positive data culture requires training and supporting teachers to feel confident with new tools. In a 2022 survey, roughly a third of teachers were unhappy with the time provided to learn a new edtech tool. School leaders should allow adequate onboarding time and provide ongoing training for these behavioral insight tools to ensure their successful integration into the classroom.

Behavioral data and smart feedback systems can validate or challenge a teacher's instincts about student understanding and engagement. Examples of insights provided by these systems include a sudden dip in a student's online activity or a pattern of partial homework completion. These insights can help teachers identify at-risk students early, allowing them to intervene before problems escalate.

The adoption of behavioral insight tools is triggering a systemic shift in school culture, including the use of data in professional learning communities. The Forbes Business Council, a growth and networking organization for business owners and leaders, has recognised the potential of these tools, but whether they qualify as educators remains uncertain.

User-friendly dashboards can turn complex student information into clear, timely insights without adding to a teacher's workload. This agile approach frees up time for creativity and personal connection—the human elements of teaching no algorithm can replace. In a nutshell, data is helping educators make informed decisions, personalise learning, and identify at-risk students, while still leaving room for the essential human elements of teaching.
