Redefining Voting Landscape: Examining the Emmy Contenders in the Music Categories
Emmy Music Awards Nominations Unveiled: Diverse Lineup and First-Timers Abound
The Television Academy's Music Peer Group has announced the nominees for the 74th Emmy Awards, with an impressive and diverse roster of contenders across various music categories. The group now boasts approximately 750 members.
In the race for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series, popular programs such as "The White Lotus," "Cobra Kai," "Black Mirror," and "The Americas" have been nominated. Notably, Ry Cooder, the composer for the documentary series "The Americas," has been recognised for his work.
The Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie, or Special category features a strong lineup including "The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat," "Dying for Sex," and "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story."
Some notable nominees in the Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music category are "Dept. Q," "Dune: Prophecy," "Lazarus," and "The White Lotus."
In the Outstanding Music Supervision category, shows like "Hacks," "The Last of Us," "The Righteous Gemstones," and "The White Lotus" have been recognised. Mick Giacchino, the son of Emmy-winning "Lost" composer Michael Giacchino, is nominated for "The Penguin."
Hans Zimmer, with two Oscars and four Grammys, could win his first Emmy for his music in "The Americas." Adam Sandler and Kristen Wiig could also take home their first Emmy for songs they've co-written.
The Outstanding Music Direction category sees nominations for events such as "The Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show," "The Kennedy Center Honors," and "SNL 50: The Anniversary Special."
Representation in the music categories appears to be improving, with women constituting 16% of the 55 composers nominated, up from 12% last year. Thirteen composers, or 24%, are people of color, a significant increase from nine last year.
Interestingly, Cristobal Tapia de Veer was nominated twice more for "White Lotus" after a public spat with the showrunner over his music.
Final round voting takes place Aug. 18-27, and the winners will be announced during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sept. 6 and 7. This year, there were 480 scores, songs, themes, music direction, and music supervision entries.
Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson, longtime "Cobra Kai" composers, are nominated for the series' sixth and final season. Thomas and Julia Newman are the first composing duo who are also father and daughter to be nominated for an Emmy. An almost identical number, 17, have won before, while nearly one-third, or 18 of the 55, are first-timers to the competition.
