In a significant move towards improving social mobility for seniors, North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has announced the introduction of a statewide senior ticket priced at just 38 euros per month, beginning January 2025. This development could set a precedent for other federal states to follow suit.

Currently, large providers like Deutsche Bahn retain the revenues from local transport in many cases. However, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a federal state that has already implemented a comprehensive, discounted tariff for seniors, has seen a remarkable success in ticket sales, with almost 2.4 million land tickets sold last year.

The success in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern could serve as a model for other federal states. Tickets in this region can be conveniently ordered online and loaded as a mobile ticket into the VVM app. Personal advice and help with the ordering process are available at the corresponding customer centre.

Consumer advocates and senior organisations have long called for a nationwide uniform tariff for fair social mobility in old age. They argue that the current system, which often leaves local transport operators disadvantaged in terms of revenue, is not equitable.

In response to these concerns, a new distribution of revenues is set to be implemented from October 2025. This revised system will consider buyers' postal codes, regional usage, and tourism, aiming to provide a fairer distribution of funds across the transport sector.

As we move towards a more inclusive and accessible public transport system, the introduction of senior-friendly tariffs in North Rhine-Westphalia is a step in the right direction. It not only encourages seniors to use public transport but also contributes to a more sustainable and equitable society.
