Revenue generation in Saxony-Anhalt's hospitality sector falls short - Reduced revenue in Saxony-Anhalt's hotel sector
In the first half of 2025, the hospitality industry in Saxony-Anhalt has experienced a notable decrease in revenue. According to recent reports, the industry's revenue has dropped by 4.3% when adjusted for inflation, and nominally by 0.6%. This decline has been observed across both the restaurant and accommodation sectors.
The restaurant sector, a significant contributor to the hospitality industry, has seen a 4.6% decrease in earnings, with a 0.3% decrease nominally. Contrastingly, the number of employees in the restaurant sector has slightly increased by 1.2%.
The accommodation sector, which encompasses hotels, inns, and pensions, has also faced a 3.8% decrease in earnings, adjusted for inflation, and a 1.3% decrease nominally. Despite the revenue decline, the sector has managed to slightly increase its workforce by 0.3%.
Michael Schmidt, President of DEHOGA Saxony-Anhalt, has described the financial difficulties in the hospitality section of the hotel and restaurant industry as primarily due to a lack of orders and reduced business expectations among self-employed and small businesses. The sector has been plagued by a high insolvency rate, with issues such as unclear application processes and mismatches between youth expectations and business demands also contributing to the challenges. These factors have led to increased insolvencies and economic pressure in the industry.
The ongoing challenges in the hospitality industry are expected to continue putting pressure on businesses, potentially leading to further job losses and closures. However, the industry's resilience, as shown by the slight increase in employment, suggests that it remains a vital part of Saxony-Anhalt's economy.
As the industry navigates these difficult times, efforts are being made to support businesses and encourage growth. Support measures include financial aid, training programmes, and initiatives to improve the application process for businesses seeking assistance.
Despite the current challenges, the hospitality industry in Saxony-Anhalt remains hopeful for a brighter future, with a focus on adapting to changing circumstances and finding innovative solutions to overcome the obstacles ahead.
