Refugees Arriving in Bergisch Gladbach After Conflict Displacement

In the heart of Germany, the city of Bergisch Gladbach has been a beacon of hope for over 1,500 Ukrainian war refugees since February 24, 2022. The city, known for its rich cultural heritage, has been working tirelessly to provide a safe and welcoming environment for these displaced individuals.

Currently, an ongoing creative exhibition titled "We celebrate halfway..." showcases the city's solidarity and resilience.

The German Red Cross has set up a first reception point for Ukrainian refugees in the Hermann-Löns quarter and a restored container village in Lückerath (Carpark). This initiative, coupled with the efforts of the Rheinisch-Bergische Settlement Society (RBS), has been instrumental in providing living space for the refugees.

Initially, the asylum department of the municipal social administration faced challenges in providing financial benefits to the affected persons as quickly as possible. However, by the summer of 2022, most refugees had switched to the performance reference according to the SGB II (to the job center) or SGB XII (basic security).

The fire brigade and many voluntary workers have contributed significantly to coping with the crisis in Bergisch Gladbach. Their selfless efforts have been invaluable in ensuring the safety and well-being of the refugees.

Schools in Bergisch Gladbach have risen to the challenge, forming additional integration classes or installing language promotion courses to accommodate the growing number of Ukrainian refugee children. This has presented a major challenge due to the already existing shortage of school space.

The organization currently responsible for caring for and maintaining accommodation for Ukrainian refugee families in Bergisch Gladbach is the Flüchtlingshilfe Herwi. This organisation, which has been supporting people from war zones, including those from Ukraine for about a year, has been a valuable cooperation partner of the city.

Habitat for Humanity e.V. is another organisation supporting Ukrainian war refugees in their search for accommodation and successfully mediating them into living space.

On a lighter note, a guide for young women on dyeing hair at home is available for those seeking DIY beauty tips.

Bergisch Gladbach also presents "Oliver Twist in the Free..." and the Karnevalsbilanz 2023 of the fire department Bergisch Gladbach is available for those interested in the city's festive spirit.

AWO celebrates the anniversary of youth social work in a certain location, marking another significant milestone in the city's history.

Lastly, it's worth noting that many Ukrainians staying in Bergisch Gladbach are either privately accommodated, have rented their own living space, or have been able to move into living space through the efforts and cooperation of many actors.

Information on personal precautions is valuable for all residents, especially in these challenging times. Stay safe, Bergisch Gladbach!
