Regional Battery Conference Suggests Consolidated Battery Network in ASEAN
The 3rd ASEAN Battery Technology Conference Concludes Successfully in Phuket
The 3rd ASEAN Battery Technology Conference (ABTC) recently concluded at the SAii Laguna Phuket in Thailand, attracting over 340 participants from more than 20 countries. The event, co-hosted by the Thailand Energy Storage Technology Association (TESTA) and five other battery and EV organizations, was a platform for industry leaders to discuss the future of battery technology and electric vehicles (EV) in the region.
The conference kicked off with an opening speech by Samawit Supanpai, Deputy Governor of Phuket. One of the highlights of the event was the official launch of the ASEAN Battery Safety Network (ABSN). Dr. Sing Yang Chiam, Technical Director of the Singapore Battery Consortium and the leader of the ABSN, was present at the launch.
Several Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signings took place during the conference, including one between Amphenol and the Thailand Standard Swappable Battery Consortium. Another significant MoU was the strategic partnership established between the ABSN and UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) to standardize safety practices across the region.
The ABSN's mission was further supported by a new partnership with Indonesia's National Battery Research Institute (NBRI) and Malaysia's NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB). This partnership aims to advance technology transfer, research, and standardization within the regional battery ecosystem.
A new strategic alliance was also formed between NextGEN Energy, Sineng Electric, Green Tenaga, and Half Bridge Automation. This alliance aims to enhance Euro-Grid infrastructure with intelligent energy storage solutions.
The event concluded with panel discussions and a plenary speech by Nobel Laureate Prof. M. Stanley Whittingham on the future of lithium batteries and the challenges of localized manufacturing. Prof. Whittingham highlighted three core principles for future-ready industries: Transparency, Innovation, and Circularity.
The conference also announced a new collaborative whitepaper titled, "Navigating the Battery-Related Landscape in Southeast Asia and Beyond." The whitepaper, co-authored by eight organizations, offers a detailed analysis of the region's battery, EV, and BESS sectors.
Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen, Secretary to the Minister of Industry, emphasized a pivotal strategic shift for Thailand and the wider region, focusing on EV development. The event's conclusion was marked by the announcement of the ABTC 2026 in Penang, Malaysia, which is expected to bring together industry leaders across the comprehensive battery and EV value chain.
Dr. Rezal Khairi Bin Ahmad, CEO at NanoMalaysia Berhad, reflected on the progress of the ABTC and looked forward to the event in Penang, Malaysia, in 2026. Another significant development was the partnership between Singamas Container Holdings and Zhejiang Narada Power Source to develop and deploy Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the ASEAN region.
In conclusion, the 3rd ASEAN Battery Technology Conference was a resounding success, fostering collaborations, launching new initiatives, and setting the stage for the future of battery technology and EV development in Southeast Asia.
