Regional growth facilitator appointed in the form of Dan Mulkerin to increase Wilmot's geographical influence.
New Wilmot Cancer Center to Open in Webster this Summer
Dr. Dan Mulkerin, a renowned oncologist dedicated to bringing innovation to local communities through clinical trials, has joined the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and the Wilmot Cancer Institute.
Dr. Mulkerin's appointment comes as the Wilmot Cancer Center expands its reach beyond Monroe County, serving patients in towns like Batavia, Canandaigua, Wellsville, Olean, Hornell, and Elmira. The new Wilmot Webster Cancer Center, slated to open this summer, will be the institute's 14th location.
Dr. Mulkerin's connection with URMC dates back three decades when he considered the medical center for residency programs. However, he ultimately chose the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. Now, he returns to Rochester, drawn by the "incredibly positive energy" and the vision of Wilmot Cancer Center to become an NCI-designated cancer center.
Ruth O'Regan, the Charles A. Dewey Professor and chair of the Department of Medicine and Wilmot Cancer Institute's associate director for Mentoring and Career Development, invited Dr. Mulkerin to tour the URMC and the Wilmot Cancer Institute. Impressed by what he saw, Dr. Mulkerin accepted the positions of associate director, Regional Operations for Wilmot Cancer Institute, and vice chair, Regional Operations for the Department of Medicine for the University of Rochester.
The new 21,000-square-foot facility in Webster will offer 18 exam rooms, infusion, and radiation therapy areas. It will provide multidisciplinary cancer care for patients, mirroring the approach Dr. Mulkerin has championed throughout his career.
Dr. Mulkerin emphasizes the importance of providing exceptional clinical care to patients in their own communities. He has a track record of opening regional locations at the Carbone Cancer Center in the Midwest, and he plans to recruit additional faculty members to grow the capacity to care for patients in the 27-county catchment area served by Wilmot Cancer Center.
Interestingly, more than half of Wilmot's patients receive their care at regional locations, with Webster drawing more patients from the area than any other town. The new Wilmot Webster Cancer Center is poised to serve these patients even better, as part of Wilmot's ongoing mission to raise the level of science and research, and clinical care in upstate New York.
Dr. Mulkerin worked closely with Ruth O'Regan at the Carbone Cancer Center for more than 20 years. Together, they aim to extend collaborative research throughout the region and enhance education opportunities.
Dr. Mulkerin began his job at URMC and the Wilmot Cancer Institute in September 2021. Along with the new Webster location, clinics were also planned to open in Rochester, Canandaigua, and Newark in the 27-county catchment area in summer 2021.
As the Wilmot Cancer Center continues to grow, patients in local communities can look forward to receiving world-class care right in their own backyards.
