Regional Inspection Focuses on Illicit Trade in Pig Fur: Overlapping Criminal Activities in Barbershops and Nail Salons within the Hairdressing and Cosmetics Sector

Last week, the Schweinfurt Customs Office conducted a regional special audit to combat undeclared work and illegal employment in the hairdressing and cosmetics industry. The audit, which took place in the regions of Schweinfurt, Würzburg, Bamberg, Aschaffenburg, and large parts of Upper Franconia, involved 79 inspected businesses, 166 surveyed individuals, and 17 on-site initiated investigations.

The audits, which are risk-oriented, with both spot checks and full audits of all employees of an employer, revealed numerous deficiencies regarding mandatory registration and recording obligations in the businesses. Specifically, there are indications of non-payment of the statutory minimum wage of 12.82 euros in eight cases. In nine cases, there is a concrete suspicion of withholding and misappropriation of wages. In one case, there are indications of an unlawful receipt of state social benefits.

In addition, during the audit, customs officers found indications of possible violations in 42 further cases. However, the Customs Administration deploys additional personnel throughout the year for these audits to maintain their preventive character, and the investigations into these matters are ongoing.

The Financial Control Schwarzarbeit of the Customs Administration is an important instrument for reducing the social acceptance of undeclared work and illegal employment. The Customs Administration regularly conducts both nationwide and regional focus audits to maintain a high number of audits in certain industries.

Press inquiries can be directed to the Main Customs Office Schweinfurt Press Office, contact information for which is as follows: Benedikt Danz, Tel.: 09721/6464-1030, Email: [email protected], www.zoll.de. It is important to note that in eight cases, there is a suspicion of illegal employment of foreign workers, but the spokesperson or responsible person for the Hauptzollamt Schweinfurt, who can answer questions about further analyses regarding customs investigations related to the hair dye and cosmetics industry, is not explicitly named in the provided search results.

The Customs Administration encourages businesses to comply with all legal requirements and to ensure fair and legal employment practices. The audits serve as a reminder that undeclared work and illegal employment not only harm the affected workers but also undermine the fair competition among businesses.

In conclusion, the Schweinfurt Customs Office's recent audit has highlighted the need for businesses in the hairdressing and cosmetics industry to comply with all legal requirements regarding employment, particularly in relation to the statutory minimum wage, social benefits, and wage withholding and misappropriation. The Customs Administration will continue to conduct audits to ensure compliance and maintain fair competition in the industry.
