'Regrettable Incident': Racism in the European Parliament
In a shocking turn of events at the European Championship, German basketball player Dennis Schröder was subjected to racist heckling during a game against Lithuania in Tampere, Finland.
Coach Alan Ibrahimagic expressed full solidarity with Schröder, stating that such things have no place in sports and competition. Schröder himself made his feelings clearer on social media, stating that he wished the offenders had the courage to do it outside the arena.
The offensive monkey noises were called out by two Lithuanian fans during the game, and these individuals were identified with the help of the German Basketball Federation (DBB) and were subsequently ejected from the Nokia Arena in Tampere.
The World Champion's victory over Lithuania was affected by this incident, and Lithuania's players later apologized to Schröder for the incident.
The DBB condemned the incident, stating that such behavior has no place in basketball or society. The Lithuanian federation also expressed regret and stated that the incident violates the values of basketball and society.
FIBA, the international governing body for basketball, has provided relevant film material and information to the authorities and will contact the Lithuanian team delegation to inform them about the situation and support efforts to prevent similar incidents in future games.
FIBA has also identified and banned one person from the rest of the European Championship.
Schröder's wife, Ellen, addressed the suspects in the audience and condemned the harassment, wishing them that their parents had raised them better. She also stated that such harassment, especially when in the public eye, is ever-present.
Ellen Schröder also made current hate comments public after the incident, posting screenshots of offensive and racist messages on Instagram.
Coach Ibrahimagic hopes the incident subsides and can be resolved somehow, and they can only fight against it. He expressed his hope that the focus returns to the basketball gala, which was no longer the main topic due to the racist incident experienced by Schröder.
This incident bears a striking resemblance to the racist heckling experienced by Brazilian football star Vinicius Jr., highlighting the need for a more inclusive and respectful sports environment.
