Remains of a missing German national discovered in Lake Como
In the picturesque town of Dorio, located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, a tragic incident occurred in July. The incident involved a 51-year-old German man who lost his life while trying to save his children from drowning.
Lake Como, approximately 80 kilometers north of Milan, is one of Europe's deepest lakes, with depths exceeding 400 meters. The spot where the incident occurred was particularly deep, making the rescue operation challenging.
The incident unfolded on a Monday when the children accidentally fell overboard. The man, without a moment's hesitation, jumped into the water to save them. However, the changing winds in the northern part of the lake generated strong waves, making the rescue mission perilous.
Despite the heroic efforts, the man did not resurface. The search for the man was hampered by adverse weather conditions, but resilience prevailed. Firefighters from the Lecco municipality, using a remote-controlled underwater robot, found the man's body at a depth of approximately 220 meters.
The boy, fortunately, survived the incident. It is suspected that the man was swept away by a current. The body is now available to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
The man who drowned was on a rented boat with his wife and two children, making the incident all the more heart-wrenching. The restaurant where the after-work parties were being organised at the time of the accident was managed by a local event management company based in Bühl.
This incident is reminiscent of another recent incident at Lake Como, where a father tried to save his son while swimming in the lake. Both incidents share similarities in terms of location and circumstances, serving as a stark reminder of the lake's potentially treacherous waters.
