Remains of a vanished German discovered in Lake Como
A tragic incident has unfolded in the picturesque town of Lake Como, Italy, where a 55-year-old man from Bühl, Germany, lost his life while attempting to save his children.
The man, who was a restaurateur and organizer of after-work parties in Bühl, was on a rented boat with his family when the incident occurred. The first signs of trouble emerged near Dorio on the eastern shore of the lake.
According to reports, the man jumped into the water to save his children when they were caught in a current. Despite the heroic efforts, the man did not resurface. The search for his body was hampered by adverse weather conditions.
Tragically, the body of the man was found at a depth of approximately 220 meters. It was discovered by a remotely operated underwater vehicle and later recovered by two divers, with the assistance of firefighters from the municipality of Lecco.
The judicial authorities are currently investigating at the location where the body of the man from Bühl was found. The man, who had Italian roots, was handed over to these authorities for further examination.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of a similar accident that occurred in July 2024, where a 51-year-old German man died after trying to help his son swim in Lake Como.
Lake Como, located about 80 kilometers north of Milan, is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, with a depth of over 400 meters. Particularly in the northern part, changing winds can generate strong waves, making it a potentially dangerous body of water.
Mayor Hubert Schnurr described the incident as a "huge shock" for the city and the region, expressing his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. The community is left mourning the loss of a beloved figure.
