Reminiscing about the past, the 'Emerald City' recollected

Returning to a location 20 years after departing would likely reveal drastic changes, as exemplified by a visit to Kenya, particularly Nairobi, where the sight would be starkly unfamiliar.

Reminiscing about the past, the 'Emerald City' recollected

In a world where one's well-being is intertwined with that of others, we embark on a journey that takes us from the Emerald City of Seattle to the heart of Kenya.

Starting in Seattle, the city nicknamed the "Emerald City," has not changed much in the past 20 years. Unlike other cities, no single car model dominates the market, with various brands like Hyundai, Toyota, Kia, GM, Ford, Honda, Chrysler, Subaru, Nissan, Tesla competing. The city's unique charm is also reflected in its immigration policies; passports are not stamped at immigration, and bags are not checked, indicating a level of trust. However, a visit to a supermarket shows the effect of tariffs with fewer choices compared to expectations.

Seattle, with a smaller population than expected, boasts only 780,000 souls. Yet, it offers a taste of Kenya through its food scene. Kenyan food, including ugali and chapati, can be savoured at Rafiki Restaurant. For those who have a taste for adventure, the city serves as a gateway to Mt Rainier, the highest mountain in the State of Washington. Climbing Mt Rainier was a challenging yet rewarding experience, with the breathtaking sight of glaciers and snow on its peak. Unfortunately, this majestic mountain has also become a reminder of the effects of global warming, as a melting glacier started a river.

Leaving Seattle behind, our journey takes us to Kenya, a country that mirrors developed nations in its rural areas, with no significant changes except for population growth and land subdivision. The national maturity of Kenya is best represented by a slower population growth and social order. Some heritage buildings in Kenya are over a century old, standing as testaments to the country's rich history.

In the bustling city of Nairobi, dramatic changes are evident with new roads and skyscrapers. Yet, the same people remain, their resilience unwavering in the face of progress. Interestingly, a sizable population of Kenyans can be found in Seattle, creating a cultural connection between these two cities.

Our journey also takes us to the strategic road that helped the British move supplies during World War II, a road that remains unpaved and is 160km from Nairobi. The Canadian side of our visit was more agricultural, with crops like blueberries, potatoes, corn, and greenhouses growing pepper and marijuana. A drive through virgin forests on the American side was breathtaking.

Ending our journey with a delicious lunch by the Fraser River, we savoured Pacific salmon and cod, a fitting end to a journey that spanned continents and cultures. As we reflect on our experiences, we are reminded of the interdependence of our well-beings, no matter where we are in the world.

In the end, whether it's the trust-filled immigration policies in Seattle or the resilient people of Nairobi, each destination offers a unique glimpse into the human spirit and our shared experiences.
