California Family Transforms Century-Old Minnesota Lake House with Wittman Estes

A fashion designer and their family have given a new lease of life to a century-old country estate along Lake Lydiard, outside Wayzata, Minnesota. The family, who recently moved from California, hired architecture firm Wittman Estes to transform the property, aiming to create a unified, light-filled design that better suits their desire for bright, flowing indoor-outdoor living spaces.

The renovation saw significant changes to the home's interiors. The kitchen was altered to feature a single, bilevel island with white oak casework and white marble counters. The statement staircase, a sculptural heart of the home, was reworked and features fluted details. Warm neutrals provide the base for eye-catching pops of color, although specifics about the interior design remain undisclosed.

The exterior was also given a facelift. The 1990s brick fireplace was replaced with a plaster fireplace and a precast concrete hearth. The exterior was brightened up with a white oak entry door and a steel and cedar trellis, but details about these changes were not provided.

The home's layout was rethought to maximize panoramic lake and forest views. Doors and windows were widened and raised closer to the ceiling to allow for more expansive views and emphasize indoor-outdoor spaces. Terrazzo tile flooring was installed, providing a modern contrast to the elegant herringbone wood floorboards.

Interestingly, the Minnesota lake house is not the only property undergoing transformation by Wittman Estes. The firm is also working on a residence in Vail, CO, although no details about this project have been released.

The Minnesota lake house, previously owned by a fashion designer, is now on the market for $2,724,800 USD. The renovation, aimed at imbuing a relaxed sense of Golden State cool, has certainly transformed this century-old estate into a modern, light-filled home that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living.
