Renewed violence erupts in North South Sudan, resulting in the death of 14 individuals.

In a troubling turn of events, clashes erupted in South Sudan's Upper Nile state on Tuesday, leading to casualties among both soldiers and militia fighters. The army spokesperson, Garang Ateny, confirmed the deaths of at least four soldiers and at least 10 militia members in the violent confrontations.

The clashes occurred near Nasir town and have reignited concerns of renewed ethnic conflict in the region. The White Army militia, allegedly linked to Riek Machar's SPLM-IO party, launched attacks on military positions in the area. However, both Machar and the group deny any current association.

First Vice President Riek Machar, a longtime rival of President Salva Kiir, was detained earlier this year over accusations of backing the White Army to incite rebellion. His detention has further fuelled the tensions in the country.

Riek Machar and Salva Kiir have been sharing power under a fragile unity government since a 2018 peace deal, which ended a devastating civil war that left hundreds of thousands dead in South Sudan. The detention of Machar and the recent clashes have sparked international appeals for calm, urging both parties to resolve their differences peacefully.

The spokesperson of the SPLM-IO, Colonel Lam Paul Gabriel, has not yet made a public statement regarding the clashes or Machar's detention. The peace deal, which brought an end to the devastating civil war, remains a fragile one, and these recent events threaten to undermine the progress made towards stability and peace in South Sudan.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation in South Sudan, hoping for a swift resolution to the current crisis and a return to peace and stability in the region. The detention of Riek Machar and the clashes near Nasir town serve as a stark reminder of the challenges that still lie ahead in the country's journey towards peace and unity.
