Request from Five Nations to EU for Financial Aid to Safeguard Borders with Belarus and Russia
In a joint letter to the European Commission, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Poland have requested additional funding for the protection of the EU's external borders. The urgent appeal comes in response to a series of incidents involving drones carrying explosives that infiltrated their airspace, most recently in July.
The hybrid threat, which includes migration pressure, cyberattacks, sabotage, and drone attacks with explosives, has been a growing concern for several EU countries. The incidents, involving drones of the "Heron" type, originated from Belarus.
One such incident occurred in Poland's Lublin Voivodeship, where a drone carrying 2 kilograms of explosives crashed into a cornfield and exploded, shattering windows in nearby homes. The Polish Minister of Defense described the incident as a provocation by Moscow.
This drone incident is not an isolated case. In July, two "Heron" drones infiltrated Lithuanian airspace from Belarus, echoing the warnings made in the joint letter by the five EU nations. The letter also highlights the increasing hybrid threat from Belarus and Russia.
Germany, Austria, France, Denmark, Poland, and the Czech Republic have previously joined a joint initiative advocating for stronger measures and additional financing to secure the EU external borders, including support for Poland's border efforts with Belarus.
Regrettably, no further information on the outcome of the drone incident was provided. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing hybrid threat that the EU nations are facing. The EU must take swift action to address this threat and ensure the safety and security of its member states.
