Rescued: Mother and Calf by Volunteer Firefighter Kalkar Kalkar - Animal duo safely saved!

On a cool evening of September 1, 2025, the Wissel fire station of the Kalkar Volunteer Fire Department received an urgent call for an animal rescue at 21:23. The call was regarding a herd of 18 cows that had broken out of their field.

The operation, which lasted a total of 2.5 hours, involved a team of 22 firefighters and one hunter. The hunter, equipped with a drone outfitted with a thermal imaging camera, assisted in the rescue by providing valuable insights into the cows' locations in the dark.

Upon arrival, the firefighters found that the farmer was unable to return the herd to their field on his own. The situation became more complex when one of the cows gave birth to a calf during the rescue operation. A firefighter stepped in to assist the farmer during the delivery, ensuring a safe birth for both mother and calf.

After locating the scattered herd using the drone, the firefighters successfully drove the cows back to their pasture. Once back, the cows were taken to the barn for safety and observation.

While the name of the farmer who sought help from the Kalkar Volunteer Fire Department remains undisclosed, it is clear that their quick action and the combined efforts of the firefighters and the hunter played a crucial role in the successful rescue of the 18 cows and the safe delivery of the newborn calf.

Happily, both mother and calf are doing well, and the farmer can now tend to his herd without worry. This dramatic rescue operation serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of the Kalkar Volunteer Fire Department and the hunter who lent a helping hand.
