Research Findings Reveal Disparities in Educational Achievements among Sinti and Roma Communities
In the University of Education Freiburg, the Institute for Sociology is led by Albert Scherr, who has recently called for long-term political support in education and participation for the Sinti and Roma communities.
Scherr's demand comes in response to a report from the RomnoKher Study 2021, which reveals that Sinti and Roma continue to face extreme disadvantage in the German school and education system. The study shows that only 17% of the surveyed Roma and Sinti aged 18-25 have an Abitur or Fachabitur, a concerning figure that reflects the lack of successful educational careers within these communities.
The root of this issue, according to Scherr, lies in decades of structural discrimination. He points out that nearly 15% of 18- to 25-year-old Sinti and Roma leave school without a diploma, and almost 40% of those interviewed reported experiencing discrimination in the classroom.
The lack of vocational training among Sinti and Roma is also evident, with nearly 40% of 18- to 50-year-olds not having completed one. This statistic, combined with the high dropout rate, paints a stark picture of the educational challenges faced by these communities.
In a statement, Scherr compared these figures to those from the late 1960s, highlighting the slow progress made in addressing these issues. He emphasised the need for a concerted effort from politics to ensure equal opportunities in education for all, including the Sinti and Roma communities.
Eighty percent of those surveyed expressed a desire for corresponding support from politics, demonstrating a clear need for action. Scherr's call for long-term political support is a significant step towards addressing the deep-seated issues faced by Sinti and Roma in the German education system.
