Research specialist in memory studies awarded honorary professorship at the University of Magdeburg
Dr. Michael R. Kreutz, a renowned neuroscientist, has been appointed as an honorary professor of molecular and cellular neuroscience at the Medical Faculty of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. This prestigious title is bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions to research and teaching in their respective fields.
Dr. Kreutz's scientific career spans over three decades, during which he has been studying the molecular basis of memory and learning. He earned his doctorate in behavioral neuroscience at Ruhr University Bochum and has since conducted cutting-edge research at institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA), the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine in Göttingen, and the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology (LIN) in Magdeburg, where he heads the "Neuroplasticity" research group.
For over 25 years, Dr. Kreutz has been based in Magdeburg, where he is also actively involved in the Center for Behavioral Brain Sciences (CBBS) Magdeburg. He is co-spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1436 "Neuronal Resources of Cognition" at the University of Magdeburg and oversees several subprojects and the central Z01 project in the SFB 1436.
In addition to his research, Dr. Kreutz is also highly regarded for his teaching abilities. His lectures will enrich the education of medical students and those in the international Master's program "Integrative Neuroscience." As part of his honorary professorship, he will offer lectures on molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia.
The appointment of an honorary professorship at the University of Magdeburg is based on the Higher Education Act of the State of Saxony-Anhalt (HSG LSA). The scientific achievements, didactic suitability, and personal qualifications of the candidate are assessed for the honorary professorship appointment. Dr. Kreutz's appointment is in recognition of his outstanding achievements in research and teaching.
Dr. Kreutz is also project leader in the SynAGE research initiative and spokesperson of the DFG Research Group Syntophagy/FOR 5228. He also heads the "Dendritic Organelles and Synaptic Function" working group at the Center for Molecular Neurobiology in Hamburg.
This appointment further strengthens the University of Magdeburg's position as a hub for neuroscience research and education. We look forward to the valuable contributions Dr. Kreutz will make in his new role.
