Research Suspension: Genetic Diagnosis for Pregnant Women Halted at Tomsk R&D Institute Due to Absence of Agreements
The Tomsk Institute of Medical Genetics has temporarily halted registrations for certain diagnostic procedures due to the exhaustion of funds under a contract with the Tomsk Region Health Department. As of August 28, an announcement regarding this temporary suspension was posted on the institute's official website.
According to the announcement, the halted procedures include primary, repeat, and family consultations with a geneticist, expert ultrasound, invasive prenatal diagnostics, and cytogenetic analysis (karyotyping). These diagnostic procedures help identify anomalies in the number and structure of chromosomes.
The basic complex, which includes ultrasound of the fetus, blood biochemical screening, and calculations of individual risks of giving birth to a child with chromosomal anomalies and other complications, remains accessible under the OMS policy. However, the specific studies that have been temporarily suspended are not provided under the OMS policy, but under a separate agreement with the regional health department.
The Tomsk Regional Health Department confirmed on September 1 that the funds from the contract between the Tomsk Institute of Medical Genetics and the Tomsk region have been exhausted. The health department also emphasized that the basic complex of prenatal studies for pregnant women remains accessible under the OMS policy.
The regional finance department is currently in control of allocating additional funding for the Tomsk Institute of Medical Genetics. An agreement on continuing the work at the institute has been reached between the health department and the scientific research institute. However, the regional health department did not specify a timeline for when the funding for these in-depth diagnostics will be restored.
As of the time of this material's preparation, the genetic clinic administration does not have information about the timeline for signing new contracts. The Tomsk Regional Health Department confirmed on September 1 that a continuation of the cooperation has been agreed upon, but the services will resume after new contracts are signed.
The OMS policy does not cover the in-depth diagnostic procedures that have been temporarily suspended at the Institute of Medical Genetics. The Tomsk Institute of Medical Genetics has confirmed that the contract limits for the services provided for 2024 have been fully utilized.
The Tomsk Region Health Department has confirmed the information and reported an agreement on further cooperation. The announcement about the temporary halt of certain diagnostic procedures at the Tomsk Institute of Medical Genetics remains on the institute's official website as of the time of this material's preparation.
