Residential Building Translocated to Berlin
Berlin, the vibrant city located in Germany, played host to a group of 17 children and teenagers from the Big House youth center in New Wied. The five-day trip, organised in cooperation with the Evangelical Youth Association of the Westerwald, took place in summer 2021.
The itinerary was packed with educational visits, providing the group with a comprehensive understanding of Berlin's eventful history and the numerous sites that tell the story of Germany's past.
The group began their journey at the Holocaust Memorial, a poignant reminder of a dark chapter in history. They then moved on to the Olympic Stadium, a must-visit for sports enthusiasts. The city's iconic landmarks, such as the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building, were also on the list.
A stop at "Checkpoint Charlie" and its museum offered insights into the city's Cold War history. The DDR Museum in the Kulturbrauerei provided a unique look into life on the other side of the Berlin Wall.
A city tour provided an overview of Berlin's many sights, including the Olympic Stadium, the Holocaust Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate, and the Reichstag building. The Olympic Stadium, built for the 1936 Summer Olympics, is a testament to the city's sporting heritage, while the Brandenburg Gate, one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world, symbolises the unity of Germany.
The group also had a video conference with New Wied MP Martin Diedenhofen to learn about the workings of the German Bundestag. This interactive session offered a fascinating insight into the political processes of Germany.
