Residential spending slightly increases in postal services and telecommunications sectors
In a recent report by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), it has been revealed that the average monthly expenditure on post and telecommunications in Germany has seen significant changes over the past decade.
Back in 2014, German households spent an average of 61 euros per month on post and telecommunications. This figure included costs for telephone, internet, postal services, and related telecommunication services. Single households spent an average of 48 euros per month, while larger households tended to have higher spending. For instance, households with four persons had an average monthly spending of 89 euros, and those with five or more persons spent an average of 104 euros.
However, the cost of postal services in 2014 was not included in the breakdown of telecommunications costs provided. It was also noted that the average monthly cost for postal services remained unchanged from 2014 to 2019, at around 4 euros per month.
In contrast, the cost of telecommunications services has undergone a notable shift. In 2019, households spent an average of around 54 euros on telecommunications services, compared to 52 euros in 2014. The average monthly cost for internet access fees increased from 3 euros in 2014 to 3 euros in 2019, while the cost of fixed-line connections decreased from 8 euros to 8 euros. The purchase and repair of telecommunications devices also saw an increase, from 4 euros per month in 2014 to 7 euros in 2019.
Mobile phone costs averaged 20 euros per household per month in 2019, with fixed-line connections costing 8 euros and internet access fees costing 3 euros.
By 2019, the average monthly cost for combined internet and telephone flat rates had risen to 24 euros, up from 20 euros in 2014. The average monthly expenditure for post and telecommunications in Germany in 2021 was approximately 94 euros per household, reflecting the continued evolution of communication technologies and services.
These insights offer a fascinating look at the evolution of telecommunications spending in German households over the past decade. As technologies continue to advance and new services emerge, it will be interesting to see how these trends continue to unfold.
