In the embattled Gaza Strip, the population is facing a critical risk of famine as the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas enters its second year. The humanitarian plight of the 2.2 million residents has been deepened by recent developments, with international critics expressing concern over Israel's plans to demilitarize the strip and take control of security.

The military assault, which began in October 2023, has resulted in the death of over 1,200 people according to Israeli tallies, and a staggering 62,000 Palestinians as per Gaza's health ministry. The violence has internally displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza, and much of its territory has been left in ruins.

Israel's military has ordered evacuation from Gaza City ahead of a new offensive to seize the Strip's largest urban center. The offensive is part of a planned takeover of Gaza's urban centers, stirring international alarm over the fate of the entire territory. The takeover targets Hamas' two remaining strongholds.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is following through with his plan to take on Hamas, citing their refusal to lay down arms. Despite this, mediation efforts by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to secure a ceasefire and the release of the remaining hostages held by Hamas have thus far failed.

The war has been ongoing for nearly two years, and 251 people were taken as hostages back to Gaza during the conflict, 20 of whom are still alive, according to Israeli authorities. The subsequent diplomatic engagement has been conducted through intelligence officials rather than political negotiators. Mossad chief David Barnea met with the Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani in August 2025 to discuss the hostage and ceasefire agreement.

Hamas has stated they will not disarm unless an independent Palestinian state is established. This stance complicates ceasefire efforts, as a lasting solution to the conflict remains elusive. The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with the looming threat of famine and the ongoing violence causing immense suffering for its residents.
