Residents of Gaza City undergoing a food crisis are urged to evacuate, as Israel continues bombing tall buildings in the city
In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, a lasting truce remains elusive. Israel insists on retaining open-ended security control of the territory of approximately 2 million Palestinians, a condition that Hamas finds unacceptable.
Amidst the chaos, the Israeli military has pledged to provide field hospitals, water pipelines, and food supplies within its designated humanitarian zone. However, they have yet to comment on the shooting deaths of 11 Palestinians at the Zikim crossing.
The situation in Gaza City has become increasingly dire, with the Israeli military issuing evacuation orders for Palestinians on Saturday. The Israeli army estimates that 20 hostages in Gaza are still alive, but the ongoing violence has claimed the lives of 23 more Palestinians on Friday while seeking aid across the Gaza Strip, six of them at Zikim.
The Gaza Health Ministry reports that over 2,000 Palestinians have been killed at distribution sites in recent months, many of them by Israeli fire. The Israeli military's renewed assault on Gaza City, as criticised by families of the hostages, does not seem to be yielding the desired results. Gil Dickmann, whose cousin was killed in captivity last year, stated that this is not how you return abducted people.
Thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, rallying to increase pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu to reach a deal with Hamas to free the remaining 48 hostages held in Gaza. In Jerusalem, massive crowds marched through the city shouting "all of them now!" and spilled into the streets outside Netanyahu's residence, chanting "traitor, traitor!".
Meanwhile, aid groups have raised alarm about the woefully inadequate shelter, sanitation, water, and food in the overcrowded encampment of Muwasi, which was recently encompassed by the Israeli military's redrawn borders of a humanitarian zone.
The war erupted when Hamas-led militants invaded southern Israel and killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 others on Oct. 7, 2023. Hamas has urged Palestinians to stay put in defiance of the latest evacuation orders.
As the conflict continues, the international community is urging both parties to find a peaceful resolution to end the violence and protect the civilian population.
