Resuming discussions, landmines and border incursions from Cambodia remain pivotal concerns
Thai-Cambodian Border Tensions Ease as Delegations Meet for GBC Talks
Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia appear to be easing, as both countries' delegations gather for a General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Koh Kong province. The meeting, co-chaired by Lt Gen Nuttapong Praokaew of the Royal Thai Armed Forces and Maj Gen Nhem Boraden of Cambodia, started on Sunday and will conclude with a ministerial meeting on Wednesday.
The Thai delegation crossed the border in Trat's Khlong Yai district to Koh Kong for the meeting. The identity of the Thai leader of the delegation remains uncertain, as the new cabinet led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has not yet been sworn in.
The GBC meeting is discussing issues including border incursions and the elimination of landmines. Following a tense standoff at Ban Nong Chan in Khok Sung district in Sa Kaeo province, Thailand has proposed the removal of landmines from the border, joint action against online scammers, and an end to incursions.
Cambodia hopes the GBC meeting will lead to the implementation of a ceasefire agreement. This temporary ceasefire is pending a permanent agreement from the GBC talks. The Thai ministry expects clear and practical directions to enhance stability and trust along the Thai-Cambodian border from the GBC meeting.
The meeting comes after signs of improved relations, with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet congratulating Mr. Anutin and seeking normalised relations. This positive sentiment was also echoed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who expressed hope for improved Thai-Cambodian ties in a congratulatory message to Mr. Anutin.
Mr. Anutin stated that the new government will attempt to end the dispute but will not surrender any land to Cambodia. The key meeting between the two defence ministers of Thailand and Cambodia is scheduled for Wednesday.
The Thai Public Relations Department reported on Monday about the proposals made by Thailand during the GBC meeting, citing information from the Thai Defence Ministry. As the GBC meeting progresses, both countries will work towards finding a lasting solution to the border disputes and strengthening their diplomatic ties.
