Retail industry faces expected downturn during upcoming holiday season, according to Cowen's analysis
The holiday season is upon us, but the retail industry is facing a storm of challenges as it heads into this crucial period. According to Cowen analysts, risks to holiday sales projections and plans are looming large.
The reasons for this apprehension are manifold. Inventory levels are at a peak, with 84% of holiday shoppers planning to reduce the cost of their purchases. This is mirrored by a staggering 30% of consumers who plan to spend less this year.
Consumer debt is on the rise, and discretionary spending is down. These trends are indicative of a weakening consumer spending landscape. The increasing competition for consumer acquisition and wallet share is another factor adding to the industry's woes.
Inflation, exacerbated by high energy prices and global events, is likely to shape the holidays. AlixPartner's projected holiday sales growth of 4% to 7% would be a decrease when inflation is taken into account.
However, not all news is grim. Last year saw holiday sales soar, with margins for many retailers remaining strong. Despite supply chain backups in 2021 contributing to a scarcity of inventory, declining costs of freight, fuel, and some inputs like cotton are being observed due to decreasing demand from a consumer under pressure.
Many consumers and retail executives anticipate a recession ahead, and it seems that they are adjusting their spending habits accordingly. Consumers plan to spend a smaller share of their wallets on social events, travel, and apparel, with 39% planning to buy at least half their purchases on sale.
Interest rates are up, adding another layer of complexity to the retail landscape. Yet, 40% of consumers plan to buy more affordable brands, offering a glimmer of hope for budget-conscious retailers.
As the holiday season unfolds, the retail industry will need to navigate these challenges deftly to ensure a successful end to the year. The resilience and adaptability shown by retailers in the face of adversity will undoubtedly be put to the test.
