Return of Premier League at Stadium of Light brings significant enhancement
Sunderland's Stadium of Light is set to offer visitors an enhanced experience, with high-quality connections, personalised services, and enhanced safety. The stadium is now home to the UK's first full neutral host RAN managed service in a high-density venue, thanks to a 5G upgrade activated by Boldyn Networks and Virgin Media O2.
This upgrade replaces a decade-old network at the Stadium of Light and is part of a continued period of investment in the stadium. The new system, known as the SONET project, also extends to the new British Esports Arena.
The enhanced 5G network reflects Sunderland AFC's ongoing commitment to putting fans at the heart of everything they do. Brendan O'Reilly, CEO of UK & Ireland at Boldyn Networks, stated that the project underscores their commitment to delivering innovative connectivity solutions.
The new infrastructure benefits O2 customers with faster speeds and improved live sport experiences. The system supports features such as seamless video uploads and in-seat food ordering, providing a more immersive and engaging matchday experience for supporters.
David Bruce, chief business officer of Sunderland AFC, expressed his excitement, stating that the enhanced 5G network will unlock opportunities to enhance the matchday experience for supporters. The project is also part of Sunderland's vision for innovation and growth, shaping a smarter, more connected environment for the community.
The rollout is one of several high-profile projects under the SONET initiative, with Virgin Media O2 playing a significant role in the deployment of the CaaS project at the Stadium of Light. The single 5G network managed by London-based Boldyn is now available for all mobile operators in the 49,000-capacity stadium.
It's worth noting that this news is not related to the recent announcement about Jim Ratcliffe, owner of Manchester United, investing in Castore fashion house. Sunderland, however, is pushing a wider digital transformation agenda with this project, aligning with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's backing of the SONET project.
This innovative step forward in technology is set to redefine the Stadium of Light experience, offering visitors a more connected, personalised, and safe environment.
