Revolutionized hospital care through innovative digital systems in Welsh hospitals
Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, serving the five areas of Gwent including Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport, Torfaen, and the neighboring area of South Powys, is set to revolutionize medicines prescribing and administration with the implementation of an electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (ePMA) system.
This new system, to be rolled out across local hospitals within the health board, is part of the strategy for the health board's next 10-year plan for healthcare in Gwent. The work of delivering ePMA in hospitals will form a significant part of this strategy.
The health board has selected Better as its technology supplier for digital prescribing and medicines administration. This decision is a key step towards the Welsh Government's commitment to fully implement electronic prescribing in Wales.
The dedicated team at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has identified several benefits of ePMA. These include reductions in spend on medications, improved safety around better documentation of allergies, and a reduction in time spent by health and care staff locating patient information.
With the implementation of ePMA, clinicians will have instant access to comprehensive medication records and decision support tools. This will enable organization-wide analysis of prescribing trends, supporting continuous quality improvement for better patient outcomes.
ePMA will store medications records digitally and make them available 24/7, reducing time lost searching for paper charts. This will not only make the process safer and easier but also more efficient.
The health board employs over 14,000 staff, including more than 250 consultants and over 1000 hospital and general practice doctors. The implementation of ePMA will be a significant improvement for these professionals, streamlining their work and allowing them to focus more on patient care.
The funding for the introduction of ePMA in the hospitals of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board was supported and funded by the Welsh Government. This support is part of the Digital Medicines Programme led by Digital Health and Care Wales.
The announcement of partnering with Better to roll out ePMA to all Aneurin Bevan University Health Board hospitals is another example of progress towards the Welsh Government's commitment to fully implement electronic prescribing in Wales. This commitment is a step towards modernizing healthcare in Wales and improving patient outcomes.
