German Prize for Heritage Conservation 2025: Ingrid Girrbach to Receive the Silver Half-Sphere
The German National Committee for Heritage Conservation (DNK) has announced the winners of the German Prize for Heritage Conservation 2025, with Ingrid Girrbach receiving the highest award for civic engagement in heritage conservation—the Silver Half-Sphere.
Ingrid Girrbach, a dedicated conservationist, will be honoured for her significant contribution to preserving and protecting Germany's cultural heritage. For over 30 years, she has managed the German Steam Locomotive and Model Railway Museum in Tuttlingen, a unique institution that attracts attention throughout Germany due to its combination of heritage conservation, technical history, and voluntary engagement.
The museum, open to the public for guided tours, lectures, and interactive activities, boasts a seven-stall ring locomotive shed and a fully functional turntable. It houses 26 steam locomotives, several diesel and electric locomotives, historical passenger, sleeping, and freight cars, and many other exhibits, all serving as technical witnesses of German railway history.
Girrbach's dedication to the museum is evident in her efforts to save it from falling into disrepair. Her tireless work has ensured that the museum continues to thrive and educate visitors about the importance of preserving our heritage.
The German Prize for Heritage Conservation 2025 is a prestigious award given annually to outstanding contributors in the field of heritage conservation in Germany. It is a significant recognition for individuals and organizations dedicated to this cause, and a symbol of the commitment of the DNK to promoting and supporting heritage conservation.
The award ceremony for Ingrid Girrbach will take place on November 3 in Berlin, where she will receive the Silver Half-Sphere. The German Prize for Heritage Conservation 2025 is not just an accolade, but a testament to the importance of preserving and protecting Germany's cultural heritage.
